As of June 13, 2016, the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) reports that Indian Consular posts are experiencing extraordinary wait times for nonimmigrant visa (NIV) interview appointments. The current visa interview wait times for all NIV categories, other than B, F, and J, at the following Consular posts include:

  • Chennai – 75 days
  • Hyderabad – 93 days
  • Kolkata – 96 days
  • Mumbai – 88 days
  • New Delhi – 100 days

It is expected that these backlogs are likely to continue, if not worsen, during the busy summer months. The U.S. Department of State (DOS) indicated that backlogs are due to an 80% increase demand in visas over the last 5 years for travel to the U.S. DOS is seeking approval from the Indian government to add Consular positons in an effort to decrease the NIV wait times.

Given these delays, we advise our Indian citizen clients who are currently in the U.S., and who will require new NIV stamps to re-enter the U.S., to delay any unnecessary travel to India until these backlogs have subsided.  Last, for our Indian citizen clients that possess expired visas, and who have urgent travel needs outside the U.S., we ask that you contact us to discuss the possibility of applying for a NIV stamp outside of India.
